Further research

Jessica Ennis
  • Sheffield United renamed one of its stands in honour of Jessica Ennis-Hill, who started her athletics career in Sheffield, after she won heptathlon gold at London 2012
  • Jessica Ennis-Hill has said she wants her name removed from a Sheffield United stand if the club gives Ched Evans a contract.
  • The Olympic gold medallist - in whose honour the club's Bramall Lane stand is named - said re-signing the convicted rapist would "completely contradict" her beliefs.
  • The heptathlete is the latest high-profile figure to warn she would cut ties with Sheffield United if Evans is given a chance to play again.
  • She said in a statement: "I believe being a role model to young people is a huge honour and those in positions of influence in communities should respect the role they play in young people's lives and set a good example.

Sheffield United v Notts County - Sky Bet League One
The club renamed the Bramall Lane stand after Ennis-Hill's 2012 triumph
  • "If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs."
  • Evans, 25, was released from prison last month after serving half of a five-year jail term and continues to protest his innocence.
Ennis then recieved an abundance of rape threats on twitter for making this moral stand.
  • South Yorkshire police are investigating rape threats sent to Olympic gold medallist Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill after she said she would request the removal of her name from a stand at Sheffield United if it offers a new contract to convicted rapist Ched Evans.
  • Ennis-Hill received the abuse on Twitter, with one tweet, sent from the handle @RickieLambert07 reading: “Jessica Ennis-Hill is a stupid cunt. Saying she will remove her name if Ched Evens [sic] is signed. I hope he rapes her.” Both the tweet and account were then deleted.
  • After the troll was called “scum” for his threat, he replied: “Freedom of speech mate … I’ll say what I want when I want!”.
  • Another Twitter user, going by the handle @CoreyOC21, sent a message to Ennis-Hill which read: “Hope Ched Evans gets you you little slut.”
  • A spokesman for South Yorkshire police said: “Officers are looking into the tweets.”

Once again women being degraded and insulted by men for having the power and courage to stand up for their beliefs. Branded a 'slut' and recieving threats for doing so. Unacceptable.

I typed into search on the BBC news website gender equality and the last story hadn't arisen since 2012. However, it is still an issue, just not being brought to light as much.

NOVEMBER 2014

http://www.itv.com/news/2014-11-13/tonight-a-fair-deal-for-women/

They claim matters are only getting worse as Britain has dropped 17 places in a rank of countries with gender equality. I feel this is a much bigger issue to the new unseen unspoken of culture in Britain from male behaviour towards women, degrading women. I feel that the fact we are still not seen as equal influences men to treat women in this way.

What bothers me is the way that men view feminists. I got into a little heated debate with my housemates who are males when they asked me if i was a feminist and jumped down my throat about how feminists are annoying, that genders should not be equal and some jobs are just made for men, how sport should not be equal etc and I had to sit there silent because I was being spoken over. This is from males that I feel are uneducated about the matter and are going off the way they have been brought up in this society, they view feminism as a negative thing. The word scares them I think.

Gender Inequality: Feminist Theory and Politics

Lorber, Judith (2009), Gender Inequality: Feminist Theory and Politics, Nova Iorque, Oxford University Press.
This is an analysis of the feminist movement's views of gender inequalities in the last 40 years. The book addresses the main policies and theories on these inequalities. It also looks at the new lines of research on feminism in the 20th century.

Women carrying out masculine tasks

I have another idea to show women acting like men, doing things seen as stereotypically manly jobs or sports and write the word LAD underneath

BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

I think it would be interesting to focus on culture, and compare books from an earlier date to current opinions on the matter; seeing how this has changed.

Study Task 4 - Peer Review & Research Notes

In groups of 3 we assessed each others work and this was quite helpful to me. I felt that I didn't really get as much feedback as the others in terms of new ideas because they feel my idea is already pretty strong but it would have been nice to have been given new methods of research. I feel at this stage its hard to pin my idea down to a single question. I know roughly it's about gender equality and cultures that have developed into the modern day degrading of women and how this has become socially acceptable. It has started to become a trend with Lad Culture. They gave me the idea to spin it on it's head and create my own culture of 'Lasses' and make fake society posters around to get a reaction of this. However I am still unsure what I am questioning? Am I questioning when it started or why were accepting it? How it has happened? What are it's influences? I feel I am not sure until I gather more research.

Points I was told to look at:
  • Stay at home dads
  • Jessica Enis on rape
  • Kim Kardashian subjecting her body
  • Phone hack of female celebs

Seminar - Walter Benjamin ' The work of art in the mechanical reproduction '

Notes

My chosen illustration to support this essay

Andy Warhol's Pop Art

So many reproduced version of this image that I don't know which the original is. This style has been replicated (a diluted version) for other celebrities all over the world.

People have took it upon themselves to create their own styles of this. We see it on canvas' all the time in little shops in towns people making money off of replicating this famous style of art. It has became accessible to the people.
