1. Outline how you have identified an issue and approached practical responses so far

I have identified an issue within Gender Inequality which is culture. From this I discovered that there is an unspoken subculture being generated by males of today the ‘Lad Culture.’ I have looked at what it means to be a ‘Lad’ where these ‘lads’ can be found, what they speak about, and what they look like in my research. In order to make this practical I initially have looked at the appearance of ‘Lads.’
From my research one thing I found was that there is a huge trend of beards within lad culture as well as hairstyles. This puts pressure on males to conform to this culture so I have initially drew just bears and hairstyles as that is the main focus that outlines being a male. I wrote the word LAD with the image. I looked at hairstyles that were a popular trend back from the 1920s through to current day.

2. Identify the ways in which your visual responses and theory are connected. How and why does one process inform the other?

My visual response is connected with my theory because it is a humorous take on how men are conforming together to create this culture of what it means to be a man, what men should look like and how they should act. They inform each other because they allow for me to look further in to what my question is going to be and which angle I want to take with this.

3. List the visual research sources you are using to develop and inform your practical responses

Reportage of males from real life situations to show current research
Imagery from the internet of stereotypical ‘Lads’
Imagery from the internet of a male culture from the past
Library books on gender equality and photography for references

4. Begin to define the visual aspect of CoP2 here: bullet point your action plan for practical production of visual development and the 8-12 page publication. (content should be ideas-based at this stage: roughs and investigating media)

My visual aspect will be a humorous twist on what it means to be a man and woman in todays society, highlighting topics of inequality such as pay, sports, roles. I will look at this culture of today compared to men and women of the past through my drawing.
I wish to spin the culture of today on it’s head and remind the youth of today of a time where this degrading of eachothers gender did not take place. But also, strive for a change still by encouraging the idea that we are equal, as Emma Watson campaigns with HeforShe. I want to take away the notion of being a ‘feminist’ and encourage being equal instead.

Images related to research

My research images show people mocking this idea of degrading women, some are simple yet effective and quite graphic, some are humorous, all are proving a point. I want to create something that includes text but is still quite simple and straight to the point. I want to play on the idea of a 'lad' maybe having girls act like lads or simplify it to eyelashes and big lips but it has a moustache like a 'lad' showing women acting like men. Or women acting out stereotypical male roles and it just says 'lad' underneath.
